I've never tried blogging about a non-me topic before, so I'm not entirely sure what I'm doing. I suppose I could look it up on eHow, but somehow I don't think I'd be much better informed after doing that. If you see me doing something wrong, let me know and I'll see what I can do to improve.
To find a topic for today's article, I typed "owning too much" into google and nabbed the second article that showed up. One might think I'd go with the first one, but that was a post on a different blog, whereas the second was an actual news article. In fact, it's a BBC news article called "Misery Creep" by Brendan O'Neill.
This article starts out by claiming that countries where there is a 'selfish capitalism' have a higher incidence of mental diseases, and it goes on to prove itself wrong and attribute everything to the fact that mental disorders are much more liberally diagnosed in places with 'selfish capitalism' than in places without. Which means the entire original conclusion was based on correlation and a few anecdotes.
However, if you didn't read the whole article, or you haven't heard as much about fuzzy science reporting as I've apparently have, then you might have been convinced that the sheer amount of stuff that you own is going to make you depressed.
I hope that this isn't the original core article about owning too much that everyone has been basing their blogs on, because if it is I will have to get rid of something--my core belief in the integrity of humans (although I'm not sure why I was keeping that in the first place; I hardly ever use it, and it never ends well when I do).
Next week I'll be blogging about something that may or may not be a bit more informative. I hope it'll be more informative. In the meantime, enjoy objects 99 and 100!
